The book is "The House at Sugar Beach,” and it recounts Helene’s youth in a rich and pampered elite family descended from the slaves who founded Liberia in the early 19th century. Later, Helene moves to America and becomes a reporter and writes indignant articles about racial oppression in Mississippi -- and realizes that it’s an echo of the system she grew up with in Liberia, when she was on top. . . . "The subliminal messages do not go away. I so agree with you about the newly wired brain and the sense that we have worked too hard and too long to jeopardize that sobriety with ‘just one,’ a nonsensical idea at best.
