Tech Update: Sony to Trim 8,000 Jobs and Reduce Investment

Sony blamed the rapid deterioration in the global economic outlook and the strength of the Japanese currency for the cuts.

Government and technology experts are urging a move away from passwords and toward more secure devices.

Microsoft said it would abide by a European privacy panel’s request to reduce the length of time it kept records of Web searches if its rivals, Yahoo and Google, did the same.

The attackers used global positioning system handsets and satellite photos, and communicated with their handlers via hard-to-trace Internet phones.

The company said fourth-quarter earnings and revenue would fall significantly below earlier forecasts, as the global market for semiconductors continues to weaken.
